Abstract —Plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) plasma levels have been consistently related to a polymorphism (4G/5G) of the PAI-1 gene. The renin-angiotensin pathway plays a role in the regulation of PAI-1 plasma levels. An insertion ( I )/deletion ( D ) polymorphism of the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) gene has been related to plasma and cellular ACE levels. Abstract Some recent studies suggested a role of the endogenous opioid system in modulating opioid-induced hyperalgesia (OIH). In order to test this hypothesis, we conducted a prospective randomized, placebo-controlled, 2-way crossover study in healthy human volunteers. We utilized a well-established model of inducing OIH after a brief exposure to the μ-opioid agonist remifentanil using intradermal electrical stimulation. 1. Active orthostasis causes a fall of systolic blood pressure in the morning; this fall was more extensive in severe arterial hypertension. 2. Everyday physical activity produces a marked rise of systolic blood pressure, which is higher at noon and in the evening than in the morning; the hypertensive response is somewhat greater in WHO II and III, than in WHO I, grades of hypertension. 3. In studies on blood pressure behaviour in hypertensive subjects the circadian variability not only of the blood pressure at rest but also of the blood pressure response to various stimuli has to be considered.

OBJECTIVES: To assess cognitive functioning in patients affected by beta-thalassemia major (beta-th) by using a neuropsychological battery, and to identify clinical correlates. MATERIAL AND METHODS:Forty-six beta-th patients and 46 controls similar for age, sex, and education participated in the study. All subjects performed a comprehensive neuropsychological battery including tests of abstract reasoning, attention, executive functions, language, constructional/visuospatial skills, and memory.
